Orc Problem 3.2: Why Difficulty Suddenly Spikes

Last verified 2026-08-11

If you are stuck on 3.2, the problem is almost certainly which upgrade branches you took, not how you are placing turrets.

A reviewer with 3.1 hours played put it precisely: the game is "massively fun tower defense — unless you don't pick both lasers and grenade towers before 3.2," at which point "the stage is set up with such a massive leap in difficulty in its design that maxed out towers of every other category" fall short.

That is an unusually specific complaint, and it matches what the achievement data shows.

The measured cliff

Steam's global unlock rates make the shape of the difficulty curve visible:

MilestonePlayers who reached it
Survive level 197.3%
Survive level 387.7%
Survive level 626.9%

Between level 3 and level 6, roughly two thirds of the remaining players stop. The drop does not happen gradually across four levels — reviews consistently locate it at the 3.x range, which is where 3.2 sits.

Why lasers and grenades specifically

Look at what those two turrets do that the others do not.

Laser — 550 range and 15 bounces. It is the only turret that hits the same wave repeatedly by ricocheting down a corridor. Every other turret gets one pass per orc.

Grenade launcher — a 60% slow for 3 seconds, and slowed orcs take 30% more damage. It is the only turret that multiplies everything behind it.

A defence built on cannons and gunners scales linearly: more turrets, more damage. A defence with a laser corridor and a grenade slow scales multiplicatively. On early levels linear is enough. On 3.2 it stops being enough, and no amount of upgrading a linear build closes the gap.

That is why a maxed-out cannon line fails a stage that a moderately upgraded laser-and-grenade line clears.

What to do if you are already stuck

The good news is that nothing is lost. Mumpitz Games' store description states that resources are earned from every run, won or lost. Failed attempts at 3.2 are still funding your upgrade tree.

The practical sequence:

Stop retrying 3.2 for now. Repeating a stage you cannot clear earns resources slowly. Replaying an earlier stage you clear comfortably earns them faster per minute.

Put the next resources into the laser and grenade branches, even if your cannons are further along. You are buying a different scaling curve, not a bigger number.

Then come back. Most players who describe getting past this point describe it as a build change rather than as improved play.

If you would rather not respec your upgrade order

There is a second route, described by the player Григорий for a later stage but applicable here: replace the grenade slow with manual ability discipline. Freeze the group closest to your base with the cryo beam, spend strafing runs on accumulations, and hold nukes until the strafing runs are gone.

This works, but it is more demanding every single attempt, where the upgrade route is a one-time cost. If you are grinding anyway, buy the branches.

Why the game does this

Read charitably, 3.2 is a teaching stage. Everything before it can be beaten by adding turrets; 3.2 is the first stage that requires you to understand what the turrets do. Several positive reviews describe the game as "more of a puzzle game than a tower defense," and this is where that becomes true.

Read less charitably, it is a difficulty spike placed exactly where the meta-progression grind starts to feel long. Both readings are compatible with what players report.

The same lesson, one level later

The four-turret-type achievement on 6.1 is the same problem in a harder form — and there, the community layouts split on exactly this axis. Most published 6.1 layouts assume the grenade branch is unlocked; one player wrote an alternative layout specifically because he had upgraded everything except slow-down grenades and could not use any of them.

If 3.2 taught you that branches matter more than tiers, 6.1 is where that lesson gets graded.

What we have not documented

We do not have the wave composition, enemy counts or map layout for 3.2, and no source we consider reliable has published them. We also cannot confirm the exact upgrade level at which a laser-and-grenade build clears the stage — the review quoted above names the branches but not the tiers.
